A Jon Post
Well, this week wasn’t really going to be a “blog” week so much as just a link to the newsletter we wrote for everyone. Instead, we had something happen on Saturday that we felt we should share with you all.
Saturday, very early in the morning, it started raining very hard. It kept it up and at about 6 Layne got out of bed and went down and saw that the water was rising pretty steadily. She woke me up and I did what I could to try to hold back the might flow of the torrent. I began bailing out our driveway but simply could not keep ahead of the waterfall that was coming from our roof. We moved what we could in the house, stuffed plastic bags under the doors and prayed the rain would stop.
It didn’t.
3 hours later our house had an inch of water in it.
I spent the next 4 hours bailing water into our road (surrounded by neighbors doing the same thing) trying to lower the water level in our yard so that the water would run back out of our house. After a while it finally started rolling out and Layne gave it a helpful shove with a squeegee we went out and bought. Because it looked like the rain could start back up at any moment I kept up the bilging process and Layne dried most of the house out.
Our wood floor has taken the most damage. As you can see in these pictures it’s in a lot of trouble. The water got under and into the wooden slats and they swelled up so that they don’t fit together anymore. We will probably have to redo the floors.
Such is life.
We honestly don’t deserve a dry, waterproof house so we’re not complaining.
The house is mostly dry and we’re fine. Anything that would have been critical in the water was upstairs and our roof sheds water very well.
Anyway, we did finish our newsletter. Please download it here and read it when you have the time. I know you may have just taken up your “read Jon and Layne’s stuff” time by reading this blog but please do read this newsletter when you get the chance. We’ve spoken of our time at the hospital and our plans (including a delay) for our “Casa Ahava” project in our home.
We are so blessed by you, your prayers, your support, your emails, your comments here even. We’re blessed to have a family who loves us across the world.
Layne! Your buns and legs and arms and all of you but sweet Anaya is so tiny! You are too cute! So sorry this happened! Such is life as you said Jon! We just had to patch our roof due to rain coming in our light fixture in our bathroom. They patched it but we haven’t gotten the sheetrock on the ceiling fixed yet since it’s damaged. Lovely huh? I don’t know what people who have no hope in the Lord do because we know He has taken care of us and always will. How do they deal with stress?? I thank the Lord that He is and was and will always be faithful. He is a good God even in the midst of trouble or frustration. We love you guys! Please let your supporters know an update on how much to fix your damage and any other things ya’ll are doing or needing. I know many of us would love to donate towards what you need! And also can you maybe add a list of things that you would like in packages? I’m going to start and list and donation thing at church so we can start sending you LOVE packages :) Love you guys so much!! ABSOLUTELY can’t wait to see sweet Anaya!! And I already told Gauge because he asked when Christmas was again, that hey when we celebrate Christmas this next time Uncle Jon, Aunt Layne and baby Anaya will be here! YAY!!! :)
Hey Guys, so sad about the floors:( Praise God the furniture is OK. Funny how Gasher is up on the chair, no wet feet for him. I’m with Tara…let us know about the floors so we can help. You are both so precious – so excited to go read your newsletter now!!
P.S. Love how Tara is discussing your “buns” – save it for the phone calls Tara!!
Love you both!!!
O my, … I am so sorry about the damage and the inconvenience. Surely your landlord will not hold you responsible for the floors? I pray for your hearts — no discouragement. The Kingdom of God is bigger than ruined wood floors; somehow I have to believe that God will take care of this … at least to the extent that you are not called away from doing what He wants you to do. Anyway, in a month …. a year … from now, this event will have found its place in perspective to everything else, right? (Unless it rains like this again next year — haha!)
Yes, let us know how we can help. Love you!!!
Dang man. I didn’t realize it did so much damage to your floor. Sorry to see that it put a couple holes in it.
Well bro, I’m praying for you. I was inspired by your newsletter. You’re a studly, studly man. Keep it up.
